HEN NIGHT REVIEW TRIP ADVISER:
“Fantastic Hen Night Flamenco lesson!” – Reviewed 7 August 2012
Ranked 5 out of 5, London, United Kingdom
As a Londoner born and raised, being given the task of arranging my Sister’s Hen Do in London, during the first week of the 2012 Olympics, for less than a kidney, wasn’t something I was looking forward to. I sat down and approached it with the military precision of a small child. I went onto Google and typed in Hen Night and made a list of popular places and things to do. It was after typing up the third page of activities that I realised that none of them would suit my Sister. I went back to the drawing board. She’s marrying a Spanish man, let’s start with that.
Now, my friends and I have always been a fan of SALVADOR & AMANDA. It’s in a great central location (opposite Leicester Square tube), has a wonderful atmosphere and fantastic Tapas and Cocktails. I’ve never had a bad night there. It was only when calling to book in daytime drinks my Sister’s Hen that I found out how slick and helpful they are behind the scenes.
I called their bookings line and spoke to the manager Selina who was so lovely and helpful, I decided to ask for her advice on any local classes. She told me they ran a Flamencana evening on a Tuesday and suggested the couple who perform there. We got to talking about what I had planned and I cheekily said “I don’t suppose you ever do lessons at Salvador & Amanda?” and was greeted with a pause followed by a very enthusiastic “No….. but we could!”
As luck would have it, the fabulous Sam and her Spanish guitarist partner, Fernando, were available to give us a lesson. Hooray!
I should point out that SALVADOR & AMANDA have never actually opened their doors to Hen Nights in this way before and for the life of me, I don’t understand why! Selina very kindly arranged to open the bar 2 hours early exclusively to our Hen party. After then, doors would be opened to the public. She staffed the venue behind the bar and in the kitchen and we had an hours Flamenco lesson with Sam, who I can only describe as the most patient dance teacher in London. After we finished our lesson we drank and ate Tapas whilst they put on a short Flamenco show, just for us.
The lesson with accompanying traditional Spanish guitarist and songs was fantastic! Sam, our teacher was hugely patient and smiled and laughed her way through the lesson with ease and handled a room full of slightly drunk women up for a laugh brilliantly. Fernando is an unbelievable guitarist and set the scene beautifully with his authentic music. Amazingly, we managed to learn a whole routine as a group and then at the end of their performance, Sam pulled up my Sister to do the whole routine we had learned, on stage in front of the group. I had booked Karaoke for later that evening so sadly we had to leave but we were all stamped before leaving, giving us the opportunity to come back later that night to dance to nostalgic club music.
Needless to say, all the staff at the venue were extremely helpful. Selina made herself available to me on email and phone so I knew she was a safe pair of hands. On behalf of the venue, she dealt with the booking of the dancer and guitarist and liaised with the venue in preparing the room for a large group of rowdy women who can just about spell Flamenco let alone do it. I had ordered some reusable canvas cotton bags online from http://thecleverbaggers.co.uk/store/pc/home.asp filling them with goodies specific to my Sister and dropped them off at the venue the day before when paying for the dance lesson. I also bought my Sister a Flamenco dress and shoes from a Spanish website called www.senoritasboutique.com which I highly recommend you do for your Hen – she really looked the part and ended up loving it so much she wore it for the rest of the evening. Selina was unable to join us on the day due to a family event but we were left in the very capable hands of James who continued the helpful “yes” attitude and looked after us but also left us to our own devices. When we arrived the venue had laid out the goody bags on the table ready for our Hen’s and had a free round of cocktails waiting for us on the bar.
Opening early and providing an in-house Spanish dance lesson isn’t an activity this venue offered to the public so we were delighted to be the first to experience it. Hand on heart, it was honestly one of the most fun Hen Night activities I’ve ever done and my Sister had a ball.
Not wanting to get too Jerry Springer closing speech on you all but there are rare moments in life when you come across helpful people – especially when most people salivate at the words Hen Night and can’t see in front of them because of the pound signs in their eyes. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world and this was very reasonable. Our lesson worked out £20 per head and we split the drinks and tapas bill at the end which worked out an additional £30 per head. We moved on but as I mentioned earlier, we could have stayed there into the early hours dancing.
First thing on Monday morning, I received a follow up email from Selina asking me how the lesson went, if everything was okay for us and if we had fun. That right there is great customer service!
I believe that on the back of our lesson, SALVADOR & AMANDA have now opened their doors to other Hen Nights and Parties. As you can see, I can’t recommend this place more. Book your Party here. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.
THANK YOU, SALVADOR & AMANDA!
